Adam

Patriarch

The first person created by God, married to Eve, and ancestor of the human race.

About Adam

First man and father of the human race. Adam’s role in biblical history is significant not only in Old Testament considerations but also in comprehending the significance of salvation and the identity and actions of Jesus Christ.

The creation of Adam and the first woman, Eve, is described in two accounts in the book of Genesis. The purpose of the first account (1:26–31) is to present the first pair in their relationship to God and to the rest of the created order. It teaches that in relation to God, the first humans were created male and female in God’s image with his specific mandate to populate and rule over the earth. In relation to the rest of creation, the first humans were, on one hand, a part of it, being created on the same day as other land animals; on the other hand, they were distinctly above it, being the climax of the creation process and the sole bearers of God’s image.
