Description and usage
The chisel or plane was a metal tool with a sharp edge used to shape wood.
Translation
ISA 44:13: This verse mentions three tools used by a carpenter in making an idol from a piece of wood. All three tools are mentioned only here in the Bible, and their meanings are derived primarily from the context and from their etymologies. Two of the tools, the sered (see Stylus, marker) and the mchugah (see Compass, circle instrument), have to do with marking the wood before carving it, while the maqtsu‘a was used to cut and shape the wood into the desired form.
GNT combines maqtsu‘a and mchugah in the generic rendering “tools.” This may serve for cultures where the chisel or plane is not known. It is also possible to render maqtsu‘a as “knife.”
