Discus

Greek δίσκος (diskos)

Description and usage

The discus was a round, flat disk about the size of a small dinner plate. Throwing such a disk to the greatest possible distance was part of the athletic contests of the ancient Greeks.

Translation

Athletic contests in ancient Greece were inseparably connected with the religious cult. This is an important aspect of the discus throwing in 2MA 4:14, and this aspect should be preserved in translation, even if it means not mentioning the specific sport of throwing the discus; for example, GNT renders the last part of this verse as “they would rush off to take part in the games that were forbidden by our Law.”
