JER 52:21: In this verse some common-language translations render the literal expression “four fingers” (RSV) as “three inches” (GNT), “seven centimeters” (SPCL), “eight centimeters” (GECLFRCLDUCL), or even “five centimeters” (Portuguese common language version). Older and more formal translations retain the “four fingers” of the original, and this is even done by some common-language versions (ITCLNOB). It seems likely that giving the thickness of the Temple columns as “four fingers” will communicate to the modern reader just as graphically as it did to the ancient one.
