New wine

Description

New wine was newly pressed grape juice, unfermented or in the initial stages of fermentation.

Translation

While the Hebrew words ‘asis and tirosh may refer to unfermented juice, they sometimes indicate wine in the first stages of fermentation. Some languages, especially in wine-growing areas, have a special word for this drink, which is available for only a short time after the grape harvest. The context may indicate if the beverage intended is fermented or not. Where it is determined that fermented juice is spoken of, translators may simply render ‘asis or tirosh as “wine,” which GNT does in the middle of JDG 9:13: “I would have to stop producing my wine.”
