Description
The sistrum consisted of a frame carrying short wires on which small metal rings were threaded.
Usage
The sistrum was shaken, making a rattling or tinkling sound. Its use accompanied singing and dancing.
Translation
The Hebrew word shalish meaning “sistrum” appears only in 1SA 18:6. Its exact meaning is uncertain. Other possible meanings are “triangle,” “three-stringed lute,” “triangular harp,” and “triangular hand drum.”
