The statēr was a silver coin worth two didrachma or approximately four denarii. In MAT 17:27 it may be rendered “a coin.” A footnote might be added: “Literally, ‘a stater,’ a silver coin worth four drachmas, the exact amount needed for two people to pay the Temple tax.”
