Scripture block reading modes: multi-instance demo

Mike Engineering note

A live demo of focus, balanced, and study modes across multiple scripture block instances on one page.

This post introduces reading modes at the scripture block level and intentionally renders multiple blocks on one page.

The goal is to validate three things together:

  1. ScriptureBlock can be reused multiple times in a single document.
  2. Study-note flow merging still works when notes are hidden.
  3. Mode controls remain scoped to the block they belong to.

Each block below uses the same short real excerpt (Matthew 5:13-16, BSB) pulled from the current scripture/note/cross-reference data pipeline.

Focus mode starts clean

Study notes and cross-references are hidden by default.

Salt and Light

(Mark 9:49–50; Luke 14:34–35; Philippians 2:12–18)

The good actions of the disciples will positively...

The good actions of the disciples will positively impact the world, bringing glory to God. Jesus warns them not to do anything that could harm this positive influence.

13You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

14You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Balanced mode starts mixed

Study notes are hidden but cross-references stay visible.

Study mode starts expanded

Both study notes and cross-references are visible.

What to look for while testing:

  1. Switching one block does not change the others.
  2. In Focus mode, passage notes and cross-references both hide.
  3. In Balanced mode, only cross-references remain visible.
  4. In Study mode, notes and cross-references both show.
  5. When notes hide, the split paragraph appears visually rejoined.
  6. The content shown is real data from the pipeline, not hand-authored demo scripture/note stubs.
