Proverbs often depend on the situation. Deciding whether to respond to foolish arguments depends on the type of fool and the situation.

Lies are very dangerous because they make people act on false information. Liars cannot later claim they were only joking (see Proverbs 6:16–19; 14:5, 25; 25:18).
A gossip and a quarrelsome person both add fuel to the fire of trouble and conflict.
People sometimes hide bad intentions with flattery. Eventually, the true hatred of those who speak smoothly will be revealed.
