Description
The potsherd was a piece of pottery that had broken. Since it resulted from breaking, it had no regular shape. Potsherds were usually not very large, smaller than the palm of a hand, and they could have sharp edges.
Translation
Most household vessels for eating, drinking, cooking, and so on were made of clay, either sun-dried or fired. Such vessels broke easily and were not usually repaired. Pieces of such broken vessels were extremely common. Most translations render “potsherd” as “piece of broken pottery” (GNT, NIV, NCV) or something similar.
