Parchment

Reference

Greek μεμβράνα (membrana)

Description

Parchment was a sheet of specially prepared animal skin on which someone could write with pen and ink. The skins of sheep and goats were prepared by removing the hair, and then they were smoothed with lime.

Usage

Parchment was frequently the medium used in making scrolls (see Scroll, book).

Translation

In 2TI 4:13 the reference may be to documents written on parchment or to blank sheets of parchment. It is probably best to understand Paul’s request at the end of this verse to be “bring the rolled-up books [scrolls], and especially the ones made from animal skins [leather].”
