Description

The censer was a small bowl or pan in which incense was burned. It was usually made of metal. It had a handle so that the priest could hold it and carry it to the altar.

Usage

Coals, usually from the altar, were placed into the bowl or flat pan. On top of these coals was sprinkled a small amount of incense, which gave off a pleasant smell when it was burned by the coals.

Translation

Some cultures will be familiar with burning incense in religious ceremonies, and there may be a special word for the instrument in which this is done. However, translators should be careful not to choose a word that is associated only with the rites of cultic or non-Christian worship. It may be necessary to expand the expression by saying “small pan for burning sweet-smelling perfume.” See also Incense altar and Small shovel, firepan.
