Description and usage
The incense dish was an implement used to hold incense in the Tabernacle and Temple. It was probably used only to hold incense, not burn it, so it should not be confused with the censer.
Translation
The Hebrew word kaf literally means “hand,” specifically the palm of the hand (or sometimes the sole of the foot). Most translations and commentators agree that it is used in the passages listed above to refer to the incense dish. The references in NUM 7:0 specifically connect the kaf to incense. Some translations choose to modify the rendering for kaf with their word “incense”; for example, in NUM 4:7RSV has “dishes for incense” and GNT says “incense bowls.”
