Description and usage

The lock was a device that fastened a door in such a way that it could only be opened by a special key (see Key).

Translation

The Hebrew expression kaf man‘ul in SNG 5:5 probably refers to a wooden protrusion or a cord used to pull back the door bar to allow the door to open. GNT has “handle of the door,” while others say “handles of the bolt” (RSV, NASB) or “handles of the lock” (KJV). CEV has simply “door.”

OAI-0081_door_locked_with_bar
The unusual Greek word used in LJE 1:18 can mean either a lock (so RSV) or a bar drawn across a door to secure it (so GNT).
