Mast

OAI-0049_ship_mast_sail_net

Description

The mast was a strong wooden pole to which a sail (Sail) was attached. The pole was mounted vertically on the boat or ship and attached to its bottom. Its height and diameter varied with the size of the vessel.

Translation

In PRO 23:34 some translations render the Hebrew word chibel as “rigging” (REB, HOTTP). However, languages that cannot express “mast” will probably also have difficulty with “rigging.” Where it is difficult to express the idea of the mast or rigging of a ship, translators may follow CEV, which renders the whole verse as “You will feel tossed about like someone trying to sleep on a ship in a storm.”
