Description and usage

The fire thrower was a kind of catapult device for propelling burning objects (perhaps burning arrows) at a besieged city. It may have been simply an adapted catapult (see Catapult, ballista) or perhaps a kind of large crossbow.

In 1MA 6:51GNT expands the literal expression “fire throwers” to “catapults for throwing fire.”
