Translation
The meaning of the Hebrew word gev in EZK 16:24 is uncertain. While RSV renders it “vaulted chamber,” most translations prefer a word or phrase that indicates a place of forbidden worship, for example, “shrine[s]” (NKJV, REB, NASB), “place to worship gods” (NCV), or “mound” (NIV).
The Hebrew word tsela‘ appears first in GEN 2:22 as a rib of Adam. Certain rooms in Solomon’s Temple and in the ideal Temple described by Ezekiel ran along the sides of the Temple, and perhaps from some resemblance to the human rib cage they are also designated as tsela‘. See the discussion of 1KI 6:5 in A Handbook on 1–2 Kings.
